grindworks Wedges

Every golfer is different. Different ability, different swings and we even play on different courses with different conditions. So why should we all play the same wedges? grindworks wedges are specially designed and grinded to match specific swing types and different course conditions. Are you a steep swinger with huge divots? Are you a sweeper who takes little to no divots? Do you need more bounce and a wider sole in your sand wedge but prefer a thin sole and less bounce in your approach wedge?

The Barrett Wedge Collection

Feel, Control, Spin, Accuracy

grindworks + Patrick Reed present to the world the Barrett Collection of Limited Edition wedges. These wedges are comprised of the work of Niimi Kiyonari and Patrick Reed and over 2 years of work before making their mark on the Golf Industry. These wedges are forged with the best materials, by one of the greatest craftsmen, Niimi Kiyonari, with one of the top players in the game for the last ten years, Patrick Reed.

The Barrett Wedge – Feel Beyond Perception

The idea of creating Mr. Reed’s wedges intrigued me. When Mr. Reed asked me to design his new wedge; I immediately realized that Patrick was after feel and nothing else. For feel permeates Patrick’s game through the core and is not to be compromised ever.

So, the next question entered my mind… how do you go about designing a wedge that is unparalleled in the market and that you can only describe through feel at impact? Patrick had absolute faith in my ability to take his words, direction, and his eye for the aesthetics of the clubs and develop and synthesize all of the information and create what would be the perfect set of wedges.

At first- I was tempted to dismiss the project, only because the feel is so subjective, how would I know from person to person what feel people want to be achieved….but in working with the irons with Patrick I realized his aptitude for knowing what feeling people as well as the best players in the world are looking for… as well as what they were not looking for.  It took us well over a year and a half just discussing the details with Patrick. The alloy to use, the shape to forge, how many grooves to cut and not once during all this time did Patrick waver about the technology or processes, all he wanted to achieve were his grinds….the grinds he had been trying to duplicate with each win, with each practice, wedges that would no longer need grinding and lead tape, he wanted his wedges and he wanted me to create his “go-to” set of wedges, no grinding or lead tape necessary, ready for game- time.

It took over two years of Proto-types, discussions, changes, and sacrificed so many samples to achieve exactly what we all wanted. As a surprise to Patrick, we named his signature Wedges “Barrett” after his only son.

THE grindworks PR-B61 (Barrett 61 degree Wedge)
“A High-Toe Look” but Not a high toe
The 61 degree wedge has a nice straight leading edge, but transitions to the bounce smoothly so it does not dig. The grooves are stamped lower and are set deep into the wedge for optimal spin and performance. The bounce of this wedge is lower with heel and toe relief which allow for play on multiple surfaces and different lies and gives a player a multitude of shots, enhancing playability anywhere around the greens or from the fairway.

THE grindworks PR-B57 (Barrett 57 degree Wedge)
The grindworks Barrett 57 grooves are stamped lower and also closer to the leading edge giving it an overall straighter look but also keeps the forgiveness needed not to “dig”. The intention with this 57 degree wedge was to give heel and toe relief, a wider sole, and smooth transitions from the heel to the toe.

The grindworks PR-B51 (Barrett 51 degree Wedge)
The grindworks Barrett 51 wedge is all about “smooth transitions”, this wedge is intended to give you the shotmaking from the fairway giving players optimal spin, with the ability to control trajectory, and create the shot you want or need into the greens.

86 RAW Wedge

Different grinds for different swing styles and play styles.

grindworks brings back their popular 86 series wedge, RAW with a new vibratory finish. Produced with our signature SUS218 steel, which has the softness and feels of forged carbon steel (Rockwell hardness rating of HRB 80) along with the durability of stainless steel, the 86 series wedge is available in 4 different sole/grind styles. A raw wedge connects the player with the pure form of the club, providing unobtrusive impact equaling better spin and more control. The Vibratory finishing gives the wedge a smooth clean unique look and removes any impurities on the surface.

Every golfer has a different swing and play style, so why should we all play the same wedges. The different grinds of the 86 wedge will allow golfers to choose the grind that suits not only their swing and play style but in theory also the type of courses that they play on. grindworks, your game, your club.

86A RAW Wedge
grindworks 86A RAW Wedge
features a narrow sole with less bounce and slight trailing edge relief. The A-grind is best suited for those with a more sweeping swing with little to no divots taken. Excels in tight lies and on courses with firmer conditions. Perfect approach wedge for control and accuracy.

86C RAW Wedge
grindworks 86C Raw Wedge
excels in bunkers thanks to high bounce and a wide sole which helps create a huge wave of sand at impact. This higher bounce also helps prevent digging on softer more lush ground conditions. With only slight relief on the trailing edge, the wedge can still be used for tight lies as well. The C-grind is best for a player with a steep angle of attack and can be used for approaches, bunkers, or lob shots.

86D RAW Wedge
grindworks 86D RAW Wedge
features an aggressive toe and heel grind which increases playability by allowing the player to open the face and still keep the leading edge flat and aimed at the target. The D-grind is great for those players who excel in their short game especially in close proximity around the greens. For players who like to manipulate their wedge shots by opening the face, and for those who want to be more creative with a more versatile wedge.

86F RAW Wedge
grindworks 86F RAW Wedge
is another variation of 86D. With a wider width sole and higher bounce, the F-grind fits the player with a steep angle of an attack who wants an all-around wedge that excels around the greens, on full approaches, and in the bunker. A forgiving all-around wedge for those who struggle with their wedge play.

Tungsten Forged Wedge

Feel, Control, Spin, Accuracy

The grindworks Forged Tungsten Wedge is forged from S20C carbon steel for that soft impact feel and extra bite on the ball. While many wedges on the market today and most classic wedges are designed with most of the weight towards the sole, our design features what we call a Hollow Gravity Chamber, where the back face of the wedge has been hollowed out to help move the center of gravity higher in the wedge.

We also designed the wedge with a thicker top blade section with tungsten weight forged into the head (making the weights invisible).  This also helps bring CG higher in the head. We tapered off the top line in order to keep it pleasant looking at address. Wedges with lower CG in their design are not as stable at attacking the pin due to a higher trajectory which is also affected by the wind. A raised CG creates a powerful at the pin trajectory with increased back spin.

The grindworks Forged Tungsten Wedge also features a straight neck with a teardrop shape head, a trailing edge grind on the sole and heel relief for more workability and versatility. Attack the pin with confidence!

DF Wedge

Feel, Control, Spin, Accuracy

The DF Wedge’s magic lies in the toe height with a straight neck, which suppresses face progression allowing a player to open the clubface wide open or to play  a square-face shot and create shot after shot with that “spin and stop” action we all love. The grind on the double-forged wedge (DF Wedge) is as important as the grooves on the face. This particular grind is so versatile it could easily become your favorite club in the bag.

Starting with the heel of the wedge, it is gently ground and softly transitioned to the sole of the club eliminating any drop off from the sole to the heel which helps the DF Wedge glide through the turf and helps eliminate the heel digging which can often be the cause of a lot of misses on the golf course.

From the heel to the sole -the wedge has a smooth transition that trails off the back edge of the sole and smoothly rolls down to the toe, where it is lightly grinded and softened so when you want to play an uphill shot, a flop shot or bunker shot it adds relief to the toe, which is very helpful during the follow- through. This DF wedge is a custom-design meant to give players and advanced golfers the right feel, adaptability, and ability to play many different shots with a single wedge- when you need it. It can easily become the most versatile club in the bag.

CW505 Forged Wedge

Compact and soft. Spin control at its best.

The grindworks CW505 is a unique compact wedge designed to compliment the MC333 Forged Cavity back. The CW505 features a straight neck, small rounded tear drop shaped face and a special cavity style design.  The CW505 is forged from soft S20C steel and with a specially thick sweet spot area, designed to produce the ultimate in pure soft feel at impact.

The slightly rounded leading edge provides forgiveness and prevents the wedge from digging. This matches well with the variable bounce sole, where there is actually lower bounce immediately after the trailing edge. The variable bounce sole design is thanks to a large amount of trailing edge and heel relief which allows the player to use the wedge normally in tight lies or for more control or in situations that require opening up the wedge or where the wedge may need more bounce.

The ZIP wedge features a wide sole and cavity back design. The wide sole works together with the cut away indent to reduce friction and glide through the turf for better impact with the ball. This wide sole design excels in all kinds of lies around the green including rough and sand. The back face of the wedge features a pocket cavity style design. The deep pocket increases the sweet spot of the wedge significantly and helps distribute weight lower in the head to help players launch the ball high with strong spin.

The grindworks ZIP wedge also features a fully milled face with full length score lines. Working together with the wide sole and cavity style design, the face of the wedge is designed to produce that extra “ZIP” for powerful spin no matter where on the face you hit the ball.

The ZIP wedge uses soft stainless 218 which features a Rockwell Hardness rating similar to soft carbon steel but is a more durable material. In order to simplify selection, the ZIP wedge is available in only 50 and 56 degree options. The 50 for approach shots and the 56 for sand and approach shots requiring more height.

Like all grindworks clubs, the ZIP wedge can be built to specs with your choice of shaft and grip.
