When he won a custom built driver in a competition, up-and-coming teenage golfer Michael Smith was thrilled with his prize - especially as within days of using the club he was hitting the ball 20 yards further and he had reduced his handicap from 12 to 11!
But he is now "very happy" after clubmaker Andrew Ash of Rothwell-based Designer Golf offered to provide him with a complete set of irons to help him achieve his ambition of getting his handicap down to six.
Northants County Golf Club member Michael (13), of Chapel Brampton hopes to make a living playing golf. With the combination of his natural talent and the Designer Golf equipment he could well achieve this.
"The new driver is much lighter than my old one and I can swing it much faster which means I am hitting the ball further. I'm very happy with it and can't wait to play with a complete set of irons too," he says.
He played his first competition with the new driver on the white tees at Northants County and returned a nett 68 against a CSS of at least 72 - resulting in a drop in his handicap from 12 to 11.
Michael has played since the age of six and when he is not studying at Moulton Secondary School spends all his time either playing golf or practising his short game.
He always has somebody to play with as his Dad and two sisters all have single figure handicaps and are as passionate about the game as he is!
