The Next Big Thing In Customisation and now available to you at Designer Golf
Over recent years the options golfers have in their choice of ball has grown dramatically. Gone are the days when the choice was simply a hard cover two piece ball for distance, or a soft cover wound ball for feel and spin.
A quick count shows that there are over 100 types of ball currently available, from a growing variety of brands. Callaway, Hogan, Titleist, Top Flight, Nike, Wilson, Bridgestone, Slazenger, Dunlop, Maxfli, Pinnacle, Precept and Srixon all have multiple options to choose from.
With all these options available, how is the average golfer, or pro for that matter, supposed to know exactly which ball is best for their individual game. Until now selection was usually based on brand awareness and/or price, with the player normally unaware that there were any differences in performance and feel. A player may do his/her own personal testing to come to a somewhat educated decision, but even then that decision was based on a perception of performance and not on any scientific data.
Seeing the need for a more accurate way to know how a ball will perform for any particular golfer, Advanced Golf Solutions, led by industry veteran Tony Nelson, embarked on an incredibly detailed and time consuming project to find the answers and to then to produce easy to use software that would provide golfers with definitive information.
Obviously, the way that the data is collected is key to the accuracy and value of the program.
The information produced is based on the individual player’s ball speed, launch angle and spin rate and determines which golf ball is best for optimising distance, accuracy, or a combination of both.
Over a number of years Tony and his team collected data on every make and model of golf ball on the market and by using air cannon and robotic testing methods, simulated how a golf ball performed with regard to accuracy and distance, using a wide range of ball speeds, launch angles and spin rates.
Air cannon testing was done to determine the accuracy of the ball and a specially designed ball hitting robot was created and used to produce every realistic combination of ball speed, launch angle and spin rate that might occur for all golfers.
The result is a database of golf ball performance that is a true apples for apples comparison of performance of the majority of golf balls that are currently available.
Each golf ball tested is balanced and marked in six different locations and then tested from each of the six marked positions. The ball flight data is collected using multiple array radar systems that actually track the complete ball flight. While the data collected during the air cannon and robot testing is extremely accurate, the actual field measurements for distance and accuracy are taken to verify or adjust the data.
High speed photo units are also used as an alternative way to verify and check the data. All testing is done outdoors and each individual parameter of ball speed, launch angle and spin rates, together with the date, time and weather conditions are recorded. If any variation occurs outside of the accepted parameters, the information gathered is not used.
